Measuring the speed of an idea…

Posted November 29th, 2006 in Commentary by Chris Hansen

So Mary is participating in a social experiment and has requested her readers to participate as well

Now, I don’t do chain letters / memes / social psychoses / mass hypnosis as a rule.  I get lots of forwarded emails imploring me to send something on for a variety of reasons.  They come from friends and family (mostly family, for some reason yet unfathomed) and after I read them they go in the bin.

No exceptions.

However, this experiment is intentionally measuring how fast an idea can travel.  Kind of cool.

So, if you’d like to participate, link on through to the other side.  It is up to you.

One Sick Puppy

Posted November 7th, 2006 in Commentary by Chris Hansen

So, since Saturday night I’ve been rather miserable with a head cold.  I didn’t get up at all on Sunday and took today (Monday) off of work to try to recover.  I’ve been running an intermittent fever of 101 degrees F, so I also don’t want to spread this around, if possible.

Today was a C and C day – CNN for most of the morning  while I sat in on a meeting by phone and played Sudoku on the Pocket PC to relax.  A nap and then CSI on Spike TV while I faded in and out.  I’ve decided I really like CSI; never seen it on the regular broadcast schedule but I do enjoy it on reruns, especially since they show three or four episodes in a row.

I asked the missus to pick up some over the counter medication since I had run out.  I usually take a twelve hour time release generic pseudoephedrine.  Same stuff that is in Sudafed, without the other junk and the expensive price tag.  Problem is, it has a tendency to erase any inclination for sleep – taking it before bed was a BAD IDEA.

So now, I’m a slightly feverish, sinus and nasal congested, wired wannabe writer who can’t think straight enough to make much sense on his NaNo novel.  On the positive side, I already voted last week, not willing to trust to a Diebold machine.  If someone is going to rig the elections, I’m not going to make it easy on them.

National Novel Writing Month 2006

Posted November 1st, 2006 in Commentary, Personal by Chris Hansen

Yep, it is that time of year again. Time to attempt to pen another novel without a further thought as keyboard clicks away… except that this year I’m going to post my progress.

Here is the first paragraph from what I started today:

The end of the world began with a whisper, at the beginning barely audible above the hum of the summer insects. The few non-sapient listeners stopped and paused, searching to see if the noise was prey or predator. After a while, the noise simply became more of the normal background and the listeners resumed eating or being eaten.

The following explosion was therefore somewhat startling.

You can read the entire entry for today here and if you have logged in, you can follow along each day with this category.

What, you don’t have a login? All you have to do is ask – send me an email or an instant message and I’ll happily give you a login. Or, leave me a comment and I’ll get a hold of you!
